The heart of the device is the custom designed latch which is specifically designed
to achieve maximum reliability. Special care was employed with the design of the
latch to ensure the following criteria are met:
- Minimum torque and power required to actuate (under full load)
- Minimal chance of sticking / getting stuck
- Easy setting and engagement
- Capable of handling/holding substantial loads
- Capability for high number of cycles
To ensure these critical criteria are met, it was important to design the latch to
run entirely on bearings suitable for the expected loads. I probably went overboard
with the amount of miniature bearings although with the gas cylinder diameter being
the limiting factor for footprint reduction, there wasn’t much incentive to change
what was proven reliable.
